Barefoot in the Basement
I peeked out the kitchen window and made
sure my husband pulled out of the driveway. It was 1:30 pm
and he was off to a football game. I figured I had about 4
hours to prepare my anniversary surprise for him.
I ran downstairs to the spare bedroom in the cellar. I hauled all the
furniture out. I began pasting the glow-in-the-dark stars to the ceiling.
They looked odd with the lights on, but I knew they would be perfect for
what I had in mind.
Just as I stepped off the ladder, I heard a truck pull into the driveway.
Yippee! I thought! The "sand man" was here! I opened the cellar door
and
greeted him. With a puzzled look, he began unrolling the dispenser chute
and
dragging it into the spare room. The pump was loud as the sand started
rolling into the room! I hoped no one would hear it and come over to see
what was happening. I certainly had no time to chat with neighbors.
The sand spewed onto the floor and created a huge mound. I could
immediately
smell the aroma of the sea! The delivery man turned off his pump and I
signed his invoice. I quickly led him to the door. I ran back to the
room
and grabbed a rake. I began spreading the sand out across the entire
floor.
I took my shoes off so I could enjoy the moment! Oh, how I wanted to
linger there, but I had work to do!
I pulled out the big blue pool I had purchased at the end-of-the-season
sale. It was only 3 feet high but perfect for what I wanted
to do. I put it in the middle of the room and filled it halfway
with a hose from the laundry room sink.
Then I opened two lounger chairs and stretched them out side by side near
the pool. I draped a new white terrycloth robe and beach towel over the
back of each chair.
I dragged out the big cooler we've had for years and filled it with ice
and
some turkey sandwiches I had made earlier in the day. I also added some
juice and bottled water.
Next Came the Music I put the CD into the stereo. Yup! It was
definitely
the sound of the ocean and I smiled as I imagined what my husband would
think when he heard it!
The room was shaping up nicely as I looked around. I opened up a package
of
bath salts. Mmmm! They smelled like the ocean as I sprinkled them into
the
water. I found the small heater/ jet pump. I stretched the cord under the
sand and put the jet hose into the pool. I pressed the switch and a mound
of delicious warm bubbles rose! Ah! This was perfect I thought. I
turned
it off.
I placed a small patio table by the pool. I put an ice bucket on it along
with a couple of champagne glasses and a bottle of champagne.
It Was Getting Late...
I rushed upstairs and took a shower. I made sure to
use my "coconut" soap and shampoo. I dried off and headed for the closet.
I rummaged around and found the old quilt I had kept for 10 years. I
hugged
the quilt to my chest, dreaming of that long ago summer afternoon in
Florida
where I had met my husband..he was playing his guitar on the beach. I
remember falling in love with him the moment I saw him. We ended up
spending
the night on the beach that Summer eve.
My husband had missed his Florida beach ever since we moved away six years
ago. It was his quilt that I was cuddling in my arms now, full of the love
of that first night.. The clock rang 5pm! I ran with the quilt
downstairs
to the spare bedroom..
I turned on the pump and soft ocean music. I spread the love
quilt out under the "stars." I turned off the lights and watched
the room come aglow. I stepped into the bubbly "ocean" just
as I heard my husband open the front door...
